Eyes of the Night

The Air Defence of North-Western  England

1940 - 1943

By Joe Bamford and Ron Collier

Eyes of the Night is a book  which deals with the early years of WW2 and the defence of two of Britain’s most important cities, Liverpool and Manchester which were woefully unprotected from enemy bombing raids.

The book relates how 9 Group was formed. It included 96 Squadron, plus others, and gives detailed events of how the Squadrons overcame many difficulties within 9 Group and started to bring down significant numbers of raiding bombers ,whether they approached from the East or took advantage of neutral Ireland’s street lights to guide them via the Irish Sea to their intended targets.

The book has many chapters and photo’s on 96 Squadron and it’s members, including Tommy Smith.
