History Statement from the Media and Communications Officer

"I joined the RAF in January 1954 and trained as an Engine Mechanic (Gas Turbine). I was posted to 14 Squadron RAF Fassberg (Germany) in August 1954 and worked on Venoms. The Squadron moved to Oldenburg and was re-equipped with Hawker Hunters in 1955. I was then posted to 96 Squadron at RAF Ahlhorn who flew Meteor NF11's. In 1957 I was posted back to the UK to RAF Odiham and worked in Aircraft Servicing Flight (ASF) on Hunters and Javelins before being missemployed in the MT Section as Detail Clerk until Demob in 1959. I enjoyed my 5 years service , but on reflection I must say my time with 96 was the best. In January 1999 contact was made with Gary Brown, who was an Armourer friend whilst at Ahlhorn. Other contacts were made during the year and the 96 Squadron Association was formed at the first reunion at Honiley, where at one time the Squadron was based during WW2."   Signed:  sandy
